As we get closer to the end of the year, the final two athletics teams are getting ready to get started with try outs. Try outs can commence the first week back from March Break, Badminton on Tuesday, April 3rd, and Track & Field on Wednesday, April 4th.
Coaches are having meetings now and setting up schedules which will be released before the break so all students are aware. The sign up process to gauge interest has already begun as well. All grade 6 through grade 9 PE classes have been told about the teams and asked to sign up if interested. The current sign up sheets are not mandatory, nor do they hold a student to trying out, so if your child wants to try out but missed the day in PE they signed up, they are still welcome to just show up at the first try out and be added at that point. Good Luck 67's, let's finish the year with a strong showing at both. JUNIOR GIRLS
Last week we played two games. We won against Dr Martha Cohen and lost against Willow Park. This week we played two home games!! We won 36-19 against Wilma Hansen and won our second game 29-27 against RTA. We are 4th in the standings and are in the playoffs!! We play Wilma Hansen at RTA at 5:30pm on Monday, March 12th for our first play off game. YAY Junior Girls!! JUNIOR BOYS The Jr. Boys basketball team has participated in three games over the past two weeks. While our team was unsuccessful in the result, the players applied two different defensive systems into game type situations (pressure defense and help defense). Our defensive zone coverage was beneficial in limiting other teams chances throughout our last three games. However with the loss on the final game, our team lost the tiebreaker with our opponent. Therefore, our team will unfortunately not experience playoffs. Looking forward to next year, our team focus will be centered on teamwork, leadership, and commitment. To wrap up our season, we will hold a team “wrap-up” party on Friday March 9th at 12:30 in the afternoon (our regular practice time). We will hold a “teachers vs. players” game, with pizza provided afterwards. We will wrap up our party around 1:45-2:00pm. Our team will also take a photo for the yearbook. Please ensure all players are returning their jerseys and shorts to Mr. Klein or Mr. Rokosh. Thanks everyone for the fantastic season, and we look forward to next year! Mr. Rokosh & Mr. Klein SENIOR GIRLS The senior girls participated in a tough match on Thursday, March 1st against Willow Park. With a close match-up the whole game and being down by a basket in the final seconds, the girls were able to follow through and implement practice plays into the game and tie the game up in the final seconds. The coaches were very proud of the senior girls! We hope to keep our #1 ranking as we head into playoffs next week! The girls have their last regular season games tonight, stay tuned for when their first play off game will be. SENIOR BOYS The senior boys took on a familiar foe in the Martha Cohen Chimeras last Wednesday night. Early on, the Chimeras were hot from beyond the arc, resulting in a 15 point lead midway through the second quarter. After trimming the margin to 8 points by halftime the 67s demonstrated their commitment to the game plan by continuing to apply ball pressure. As the game wore on, the 67s forced turnovers and fought hard for rebounding position, resulting in easy baskets. At the final buzzer, the 67s secured an 11 point win. This week the team travelled to Mackenzie Highlands to face the top ranked Legends. After last night's play, the boys have finished regular season in 5th place. Their first play off game will be held on Tuesday, March 13th at Dr. Martha Cohen School. They will be playing at 5:30 pm taking on Panabaker School. The only team in action in week 4 was the Sr Girls' Team while all other teams had a bye this week and did not play. They were catching up on a missed game cancelled due to weather. They continued their undefeated streak.
Check back early next week to see how they did this week (week 5). SENIOR BOYS haven’t been updated in a while so we’re providing a long awaited update this week.
Week One: The first game of the season was an eye-opening experience for our team. We faced a tenacious Robert Warren team that dominated the first half. As our boys adjusted to the compete level required, the second half was much more competitive. At the final buzzer we found ourselves down 19 points, but valuable lessons were taken from the experience. Our second game had us squaring off with Harold Pannabaker Panthers. The 67s came out with intensity and purpose, keeping the game close throughout the first half. Through cohesive ball pressure and offensive patience the 67s pulled of a 10 point win. Week Two: This week saw us facing off against familiar foes in the form of the RT Alderman Blues. Taking on former teammates provided an additional motivational element for both teams. It was the Blues who jumped out to a lead that our team was unable to recover from. The game provided opportunity to work on our full court press, which at times, was very successful. Playing in back to back games proved to be a stiff challenge for our squad. The top ranked MacKenzie Highlands Legends stormed out to a large lead in the first quarter. Our fatigue was evident through the score as well as the number of injuries our team faced. Ultimately this loss serves as an example of the level of discipline and fitness we'll require in order to be successful. Week Three: The 67's played a hard-nosed first half against Wilma Hansen squad. Their defensive efforts paid of in the second half as the Hawks began to tire and turn the ball over more frequently. At the final buzzer the 67's earned a 10 point win. The second game of the evening saw the 67's facing a tough Willow Park team. Drawing from the energy of the home crowd, the 67's came out strong. Strong outside shooting and consistent rebounding allowed Willow Park to take a 10 point lead that they never relinquished. This week the boys have a bye and are preparing for a pivotal game against Martha Cohen on the 23rd. SENIOR GIRLS missed their games two weeks ago due to the weather cancellations. Week Three: The Sr. Girls' team continued to show hard work and dedication by winning both of their games last week at home. It was fantastic to see the support from our DGS community! Our first game was a tight match, however our girls kept their heads in the game and pulled out a win. They worked very hard and persevered throughout…well done girls! Their next game was last night at Dr. Martha Cohen, update coming soon. JUNIOR BOYS Week Three: The Jr. Boys won our first games where it mattered the most - at home! Our work in the defensive zone has paid off resulting in low points and fouls against us, and we are gaining more confidence in the offensive zone. We have scheduled an additional practice for Wednesday mornings from 7:15-8:15, so that we may further develop our skills and keep our playoff hopes alive! Moving forward, we will be working on some plays we can execute in game time situations. We did not play this week due to Family Day, but will be playing one game next week at Willow Park school. We hope to see you there! JUNIOR GIRLS had a bye in week two but played last week. Week Three: The jr girls were the only team to not have home floor advantage last week playing at RTA. They lost to Mckenzie Highlands but won 25-15 against RTA! We will get to see them play at home on March 6th. Come out to cheer them on. The Sr. Girls' team got off to a hot start in week 1, winning both of their games. Both games were close which forced the team to stay focused and work hard as a unit. Sitting in first place after week one is a confidence builder - now to keep up the strong play for week 2!
The Jr. Girls’ team played our first two games last Tuesday. We tied Wilma Hansen 24-24 in our first game! We lost to Willow Park but showed excellent perseverance and had fun in our second game! No games this week. We play next Tuesday at RTA:) The Jr. Boys Basketball team has played their first three games in the last couple of weeks. While not victorious, we are learning new skills in regards to offensive breakouts, defensive man coverage, and skill work with dribbling, passing, and shooting. The team is considering an additional practice to further develop our skills, and will be consulting with players this week on a possible date and time. We look forward to playing host next week and hope to see members of the DGS community out supporting! The competitive wrestling season has come to an end. We will wrap up the team with a celebration on Tuesday, January 30th from 3:30 to 4:45 pm at the school. Wrestlers should come prepared for some wrestling and we will finish with a pizza gathering in the foods room.
I would like to take time to congratulate all of our wrestlers for the hard work they put forward this season. It was fantastic to see them progress with each quad throughout the season. There were 12 schools who attended our divisional. Here are the results from the divisional meet: Novice Girls: We only had one novice girl on the team but she was very committed. She placed 3rd in her pool. We hope to draw more girls to the team next year. Novice Boys: The novice boys had a large team and were able to place 2nd overall only 4 points off of the two schools that tied for first. Individual placements varied within their pools but we had a few first and second place finishers within their pools. Senior Boys: Both of our senior boys finished 1st in their pools, and even with only 2 competing, they were able to finish as the 4th place school overall. This week we continue to have wrestling practices along with the third Quad meet, and basketball tryouts.
Wrestling: The wrestling season is approaching it's end. Wrestlers have their final two practices this week on Monday and Thursday, with the third quad meet on Tuesday. The Quad is at Marshall Springs School with wrestling occuring from 5 to 7 pm. Next week, the practice on Monday, January 22nd is cancelled as our mats will have been picked up already to go to Southland Leisure Centre to be ready for divisionals on Tuesday, January 23rd. The divisionals are during the morning, so all wrestlers attending will be missing classes that morning. Teachers will be informed. Like all athletics events, wrestlers need to arrange their own transportation to and from the event. The wrestlers are asked to arrive between 8:30 and 8:40 am, not before, to ensure a coach is present to supervise. Warm up will begin as the wrestlers arrive. The actual wrestling will begin at 9 am and can continue until 12:30 pm. Wrestlers should have a water bottle and small snacks for the morning. Wrestlers need to be picked up promptly at 12:30 pm to return to school for lunch and afternoon classes. Lastly, the Wrap Up Celebration has been moved to Tuesday, January 30th so that we will have our mats back and can use them as part of the wrap up. Basketball: The basketball try outs continue this week and will move into practices as the teams are made. Sr. Girls are trying out on Monday and Wednesday while Jr. girls are just on Monday, and boys are on Tuesday and Friday. There is no basketball on Thursday because of set up for the Band Concert. Wrestlers participated in their second quad last week on Wednesday, Dec. 13th at Woodman school. It was excellent to see the progression of our wrestlers as they used their skills and were put to the test with longer matches. Many of our wrestlers had wins based on points and a few even had pins to take the win.
We have 2 practices this week, Monday and Tuesday, and then start the year back with a practice on Tuesday, January 9th and Thursday, January 11th. (Please note any students on Wrestling looking to try out for Basketball as well are asked to attend the basketball try outs as a priority). Happy Holidays. The basketball season is fast approaching and there is a lot of excitement with the students to get this season started. There will be four teams, Jr and Sr for both boys and girls. The Senior teams will be made of grade 8 and/or 9, while the Junior teams will likely be grade 7 and/or 8, but the grade 6 students also have the opportunity to try out as well for juniors. Members are chosen based on their skill, sportsmanship, and team dynamics. The number of athletes on each team is up to the coach and will
The first week of tryouts is the first week back from break. The coaches will have both the Jr's and Sr's in tryouts at the same time. All dates are on the calendar, but the first week dates are the following: Tuesday, January 9th: Boys Basketball Tryouts 3:15 to 4:15pm Wednesday, January 10th: Girls Basketball Tryouts 3:15 to 4:15pm Thursday, January 11th: Boys Basketball Tryouts 3:15 to 4:15pm Friday, January 12th: Girls Basketball Tryouts 12:30 to 1:30pm (Students to bring a lunch to eat from 12 - 12:30 pm in designated area, and then begin at 12:30pm). All students trying out need to be changed into athletic clothing and footwear, and be ready to go at the above stated start time. It would also be good for them to bring their own water bottle labelled with their name, but of course there are numerous water fountains if they don't. The wrestling team had their first quad meet on Tuesday. The athletes were able to finally put all of their practicing into use and see what it is like to be in a match against other students. We had some students win all their matches while others may not have won matches, but were able to gain some valuable experience.
Our next quad is this upcoming week already on Wednesday, December 13th at Woodman School. We will practice Monday and Tuesday to prepare, and apply all the new progressions at this next meet. |
