Since returning from Winter Break, the students have already been active in a few different physical activities and sports.
To start off, all students were in Dance. The students learning some moves through line dancing, and then were given the chance to create their own dances. Most students were able to display their dances to the others within their own classes as they wrapped up the unit. Students at Dr. George have some rhythm and cool moves. This unit was also a great way to have them work on communication within a group and build those skills. Now, students are finishing up a sport-based rotation. Grade 4's learned basic skills and rules to play basketball, table tennis and tchoukball. The Grade 5's and 6's built on skills learned last year for basketball and table tennis. The 7's, 8's and 9's had a choice to do 2 sports out of basketball, indoor lacrosse, table tennis and tchoukball/handball. By March break, or right afterwards, all students will be moving into Track and Field. Grade 6-9 will rotate through all of the events that middle school students compete in if on the athletics team. Grade 4 and 5 will rotate through lead up activities to prepare them for the actual events when they enter the upper grades. We are hoping that the snow will melt quickly and we will be able to get outside once again to give them the full experience of running and throwing in the wide open space of our school yard. The grade 8 and 9 students have been given options during their PLC time one Friday per month. The sewing project will be a pillow that students can adorn with a letter or other simple design if they wish.
The students in sewing need to bring the following with them to their next PLC on Friday, January 19th: - 1 metre or 1 yard of fabric (broadcloth or flannel are the best choices) - Matching spool of thread if they want a thread colour other than white or black (white and black are provided by school) - Materials for their letter (suggestions: felt, buttons, yarn, iron on letter, or shirt paint) **Stuffing for the pillows will be provided by the school. The final measurements of the pillow will be a 12" square, and the letter needs to be small enough to fit on the pillow. We are in the last days before break and students have been involved in some Low Organization Games to simply be active. These games still promote fair play and team work, as well as give the a chance to release some energy.
Looking forward to 2018, grades will begin the new year with our dance unit and then onto sport related units. Selection of units will continue for the grade 7-9 classes, while grades 4-6 will have a range of sports to participate in. Physical Education has been trying to get outside as much as possible since the beginning of the year but we are going to be spending more time inside now until the spring weather rolls in again.
Grade 4 and 5 finished up a cooperative game unit and are moving on next week to a numeracy and literacy game unit. They will be involved in active games while having to use their math and letter knowledge. Grade 6 finished up rotating through volleyball and kickball units, and are going to be building skills for soccer and bowling/curling in their next units. Grades 7 and 8 finished up their first selection units of volleyball, kickball, flag football and soccer where they participated in 2 of the 4 based on their choice. They will now be starting their second selection unit which offers training for sport (fitness inspired), bowling/curling, low organized games, and wrestling mat games. Grade 9's have to choose between 2 activities at a time. They have worked through 2 selections: 1. volleyball and flag football, and 2. kickball and soccer. There next options are still to be determined. In only being able to offer 2 selections, we are trying to offer high interest activities. Physical education classes began this week on Sept. 6th. The grade 4 through 6's are starting off the first few weeks with some low organized games to have time to be active.
The grade 7's and 8's have begun the process of getting locks and lockers handed out so they have somewhere to store their clothes, shoes, or electronics as needed while in P.E. or participating with on an athletics team. The grade 9's will begin this same process next week. We will start into our first rotations and activities September 18th. All of the grades have begun their last rotation of the year for PE.
The grade 4's and 5's are working on skills and game play for floor hockey, soccer, table tennis, lacrosse, and batting games. The grade 6's are working on skills and game play for floor hockey, soccer, table tennis and batting games, The grade 7's and 8's had choice between floor hockey, table tennis, lacrosse, and baseball. These activities will take us through to mid June, and we will finish the year off with some wide games outside, and 1 day choice activities. The 4's and 6's have finished their last rotation and are taking part in some low organization games this week. The 5's still have 2 days left of their last sport, and the 7/8's are on their final day today.
The next unit is Track and Field for all grades. This will start next week for everyone on Tuesday, except the 5's who will start on Thursday. The 4's and 5's will take part in standing long jump, softball throw, sprinting, long distance running, and relays. There are indoor and outdoor possibilities for all depending on the weather, but please have your child prepared to be outside. The 6, 7, and 8's will take part in long jump, high jump, shot put, discus, sprints, hurdles, and relays. The measurements taken in class will also be used to make our track and field team, and all 6-8's will have the opportunity to be considered for the team. It is our hope to be outside as much as possible, however with the blanket of snow, it may be that we are inside more than we wish but will endeavour to head outside as much as possible during this unit. In January, all students were participating in a dance unit. Students learned line dances and had a chance to create their own dances which allowed them to show their creativity and ability to work with a group. All students then performed their dances for the other students in their grade.
In February, the grade 4-6 classes are rotating through different sports and activities to work on specific skills. 4's are participating in tchoukball, basketball, badminton, broomball, and outdoor games. 5's are participating in tchoukball, basketball, badminton, and broomball. 6's are participating in tchoukball, badminton, and broomball. The grade 7&8 classes are in a option module that includes badminton, yoga, tchoukball, and outdoor games. All students participate in 2 of the 4 activities based on their choice. |
