Wednesday evening the Sr Girls played the Mountain Park Wolverines in a best of 3 matches for the volleyball finals. The first game was a win for the Wolverines, but then our team came back winning both the second and third games to take the title.
The girls worked hard this season and put in a lot of practice time. They demonstrated good team dynamics and were supportive of each other throughout the season making this win feel like a true team effort. Also, we want to thank the coaches for the time and effort they put into helping the team develop skills and the teamwork needed to go all the way. Great season team! On Monday night both the Jr and Sr Girls Volleyball teams were in quarter final action. The Jr girls put out a valiant effort but did not advance. The Sr Girls team advanced to semi finals also on Monday and put up a strong fight against Midsun claiming the win.
The Sr Girls are now playing Wednesday, November 22nd at Samuel Shaw with game time set to start at 5:15 pm. They are taking on the Mountain Park Wolverines. Let's wish them luck!! Please note that student spectators are only allowed if supervised by a parent. They are not allowed to show up unsupervised at another school to watch athletics. This is a CBE-wide rule. In the final week of regular season play for volleyball, both jr and sr girls played against 3 different schools. Both teams will be playing next week in quarter final action on Monday.
The jr girls will take on the Dr. Martha Cohen Chimeras at 4:30 pm at Samuel Shaw School. If they win, they would proceed directly to semi finals at 5:15 pm. The sr girls will take on the Nickle Wildcats at 4:30 pm at Midsun School. If they win, they would proceed directly to semi finals at 5:15 pm. Good Luck 67's!!!! In Wrestling, there has been a great turn out of students who learned how to do a double leg and single leg take down this week to begin to prepare them for their first quad. They have a few more weeks of practice before the first quad hosted here at Dr. George Stanley. Parents of these athletes will receive all of the paper work next week and should look for it to be coming home along with a copy of the schedule to post at home, but all dates are now posted on the Athletics Calendar Link too. The wrestling season is about to begin. Tuesday, Nov. 7th there is a sign up time in the gym at lunch but even if students miss this sign up, they are still more than welcome to just come to the first practice on Monday, November 13th and second practice on Tuesday, November 14th.
Students need to be changed for practices in shorts and a t-shirt that is long enough to be tucked into their shorts. That is also what they will wrestle in, we do not wear singlets at competitions. They will also need athletic shoes (so gym appropriate) to wrestle, they do not need special wrestling shoes. Finally, a water bottle is great too. This should be a great first year and I look forward to getting this team started at Dr. George. Congratulations to the Dr. George Girls’ Soccer Team. They had an undefeated season finishing first after regular season giving them home field advantage for both semi’s and finals. They had a nail biter of a game winning semi’s only 2-1 against Midsun School. Then they had a close first half in finals but pulled out a 6-1 win in the end against Nickel School. The girls were a cohesive team that worked well and communicated well together to make this possible. Way to go girls!!
The girls' soccer team had a close game tonight but clenched their spot in the finals with a 2-1 win over Midsun. We are hoping to see as many spectators as possible on Tuesday, Oct. 24th as we play at home.
The girls soccer team clenched their first place in regular season tonight and will be playing in a semi final game at home on Thursday. We are looking for a good turn out of support to cheer us on to the finals. The game is at 4:30 to 5:30 pm on our own soccer field.
Soccer:
Boy's: The boys had their best performance yet and are starting to see their practices, skills, and team building to come together. Girl's: The girls continue to be undefeated with only one game in regular season left to be played next week. Volleyball: Jr's: They are continuing to come together as a team and learning how to maintain control of the game. They were able to keep their games competitive and close in score. Sr's: They are also continuing to come together as a team. They have been having good results and will be preparing next week for their regular season as well as a tournament coming up. The weather did not make for great conditions at the beginning of the week causing 3 teams to have to reschedule their competitions, but all is set to go. Both boys and girls soccer will be playing on Tuesday, Oct. 10th now, the boys here at Dr. George and the girls at Nickle to make up for the snow cancellation that occurred Monday and Tuesday. The cross country team already had their alternate set for yesterday which was perfect weather to finish the season.
Cross Country: The team brought their season to an end with a strong finish in the junior varsity (grade 6) division earning our highest placement. Final results will be released soon. Thanks to all our runners who made it a great first season for our school. We will be hoping to build this team next year as cross country running can be a great training tool for any student hoping to try out for any team throughout the year. Soccer: As mentioned above the Monday and Tuesday games at home were cancelled and are rescheduled for next week. Boys: The Wednesday boys game continues to demonstrate our boys perseverance and effort to build our team. Girls: The Thursday girls game took us to a 2 and 0 season. The girls display good communication and demonstrate restraint in their ability to maintain a lower goal differential when needed. Thank you for your sportsmanship! Volleyball: Our teams had their first evening of play this week. Junior: The junior girls had their first games this week. They quickly bonded as a team and impressed their coach with some excellent rallies and even a few spikes! Senior: The senior team also demonstrated some quick bonding and communication on the court to bring home some wins. They have been diligently practicing their skills and displaying dedication to improving their teamwork and skill. Special notice: Athletic fees for all fall sports have officially been approved by Alberta Education. Any athletes on the above teams can now submit these fees. The girl's team had their first game and brought home a win. Both teams play at home twice this coming week. Boys will play on Mon/Wed and the girls on Tues/Thurs. Come support them on our field from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. Volleyball: The girls continue to prepare for their first games which happen this week on Wed.
